President Donald Trump took some heat recently for not incorporating the border wall into the last budget proposal. However, according to Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC), Trump would rather a government shutdown than give up on the border wall.
In an interview with Breitbart News, the Freedom Caucus member exclaimed that Trump has enough backing for the plan.
“My conversations with the president have led me to believe that there is nothing less than a full and total commitment on his part to only sign into law a funding bill that actually allows for us to start construction of a border wall on our southern border,” Meadows stated. “He’s committed to do that.”
“We’re committed to supporting him in that position,” he added. “And most importantly, the American people are willing to support him in that and believe that it’s a campaign promise that this president is going to fulfill.”
Since Trump made the proclamation about the border wall during his campaign for president, many have doubted its plausibility due to its tremendous cost. Nevertheless, Trump has remained committed to his prior promise. Even when sitting next to the Mexican president at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, Trump pledged that the wall would be build and Mexico would pay for it.
“There is nothing more critical that has to be funded than funding the border wall for two reasons,” argued Meadows “One is it is a commitment that the president made to the American people and one that he intends on keeping, but the second part of that is for our national security we must secure our borders.”
“And the American people will accept no less,” he ended.
