Just four days after Donald Trump Jr. began emailing publicist Rob Goldstone about potentially damaging information regarding then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton from the Russians, Donald Trump made a speech in which he declared there was “major” news about Clinton.
“I am going to give a major speech on probably Monday of next week, and we’re going to be discussing all of the things that have taken place with the Clintons,” Trump announced on June 7, 2016. “I think you’re going to find it very informative and very, very interesting. I wonder if the press will want to attend. Who knows?”
“Hillary Clinton turned the state department into a private hedge fund,” he asserted. “The Russians, the Saudis, the Chinese all gave money to Bill and Hillary and got favorable treatment in return.”
“The Clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an art form for themselves,” Trump exclaimed.
He further argued, “They’ve made hundreds of millions of dollars selling access, selling favors, selling government contracts — and I mean hundreds of millions of dollars.”
Trump made this announcement after securing the Republican presidential nomination and hours after Trump Jr. arranged for a meeting with lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya who had ties to the Russian government.
In the email exchange, Goldstone assured Trump Jr. that he would receive damaging information about Clinton. Initially, Trump Jr. said that the meeting had never taken place but later told the media that it had to do with international adoption procedures.
Trump did not give a speech declaring any damaging information about Clinton following his announcement. However, on June 22, 2016, he mentioned the potential of a “blackmail file.”
“While we may not know what is in those deleted emails, our enemies probably do,” Trump exclaimed.
“So they probably now have a blackmail file over someone who wants to be president of the United States,” he contended. “This fact alone disqualifies her from the presidency.”
