On Monday, National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd reported on C-SPAN that border enforcement laws enacted by President Donald Trump have dramatically reduced illegal immigration into the United States.
Judd was interviewed by C-SPAN’s Washington Journal host Pedro Echevarria where he exclaimed the fall in illegal immigration to be “miraculous.” Moreover, Judd credits Trump’s rhetoric surrounding illegal immigration for the remarkable drop.
“What we’ve seen is nothing short of miraculous,” Judd stated. “If you look at the rhetoric that President Trump has given, it’s caused the number of illegal border crossers to go down, something that we’ve never seen in history at the Border Patrol.”
Judd continued, “We’ve never seen such a drop that we currently have.”
U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported a 53 percent drop in illegal immigration along the southwestern border between June 2016 and 2017. For 2017 totals, illegal immigration fell by 19 percent.
Judd argued that Trump’s efforts to prioritize enforcing border policies is the main cause of the decrease.
“We’ve got a set of laws on the books that say ‘If you cross the border illegally, or if you commit this crime, these are the consequences that have been established,” Judd explained. “And the Trump administration said that ‘we are going to follow through on those consequences,’ something we didn’t see in the last four years in the last administration.”
Judd highlighted that under the former President Barack Obama’s policies, people who entered the country illegally would surrender themselves to police. Afterwards, they would be released and given a court sentenced. Judd asserted that 80 percent of illegal immigrants did not show up.
“When you hear the Obama administration say we have to bring these people out of the shadows, what they were doing was actually going into the shadows instead of coming out,” Judd contended.
