On Thursday, Comedian Adam Carolla and the Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro spoke before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to “identify the harms of infringing on the right to free speech on college campuses” and offer “recommendations on how to encourage and protect First Amendment rights.”
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) played videos at the hearing which portrayed liberal college students engaging in riots to impede the free speech of speakers on their campuses.
“This is where it all ends. You start with safe spaces … and it ends with students holding hostage the president of a university. That’s why we’re having this hearing,” contended Jordan, referring to an occurrence at Evergreen State College.
As first-hand witness to this political violence, Shapiro noted that when he speaks on campus, social justice activists rationalize their own violence by considering any differing viewpoints to be violence in and of itself.
“In order to understand what’s been going on at some of our college campuses, it’s necessary to explore the ideology that provides the impetus for a lot of the protesters who violently obstruct events, pull fire alarms, assault professors, and even other students, and the impetus for administrators who all too often humor these protesters,” stated Shapiro.
Shapiro added, “the first step is that they say that the validity or invalidity of an argument can be judged solely by the ethnic, sexual, racial or cultural identity of the person making the argument.”
Moreover, the second step states that “those who claim otherwise are engaging in what they call verbal violence,” and the final step is to “conclude that physical violence is sometimes justified in order to stop such verbal violence.”
Shapiro gathered that people’s opinions are now based on the victimization of the speaker instead of the actual validity of the argument.
Carolla, who also spoke before the committee, added that when he used to speak at college campuses, alternative viewpoints were heard. However, after trying to go on tour with conservative radio host Dennis Prager and being denied by college administrators, Carolla argues that safe spaces are hurting our nation’s future.
“We need the adults to start being the adults. Our plan is to put them in a bubble, keep them away from everything, and somehow they’ll come out stronger when they emerge from the bubble. Well that’s not happening,” Carolla exclaimed. “Could the faculty and administrators on these campuses act like faculty and administration?”
